Story
The aged vulture Jatayu challenged Ravana mid‑air to protect Sita. He fought heroically, breaking the chariot’s yoke, but fell mortally wounded. Later he told Ram the truth and attained moksha from Ram’s own hands. Jatayu’s veer‑balidan is revered as dharma’s spontaneous defence.
Why it matters
Jatayu owes Ram nothing, yet fights Ravan to a standstill purely because it's right. Dying in Ram's arms, he becomes the epic's clearest example of dharma performed with no expectation of reward.
