Story
Bharat returned, horrified by his mother’s demand and the king’s death. He went to the forest begging Ram to come back. Ram refused, bound by maryada. Bharat then placed Ram’s padukas on the throne and ruled as a sevak‑regent from Nandigram, vowing austerity till Ram’s return—an exemplar of nishkama leadership.
Why it matters
Bharat wants the throne he never asked for to go to nobody but Ram, so he rules as a caretaker — sleeping on the ground and living as an ascetic for fourteen years rather than sit on it himself. It's held up as the epic's model of power exercised without ego.
