Story
Sage Vishwamitra sought protection for his yagna from asura disturbances. Ram and Lakshman accompanied the rishi, received celestial astras and defeated Maricha and Subahu. Ram’s first battle shows shaurya guided by dharma—strength used only to protect yajna, society and rita (cosmic order).
Why it matters
This is Ram's first use of force, and the epic is careful about the framing: strength deployed only in defence of a sage's yagna, never for conquest or glory. It sets the template for how the Ramayana wants its hero to fight — reluctantly, and only in protection of others.
